Placement A: Year 9-12
During this placement I had the opportunity to teach a Year 9 and Year 11 Health class. I also went to a variety of different classes between the years of 9-12 so that I could observe the different teaching and classroom management techniques. I learned from this experience that every teacher has their own way of teaching however when you have your own strong pedagogical stance and are confident in yourself and your classroom management techniques and style, that you will be an engaging and successful teacher.

Year 9 Health
|
During my placement the unit that I taught was about nutrition. The specific learning objectives that the teacher wanted me to cover were about the Australian Dietary Guidelines and the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating. I made sure to use a variety of teaching strategies to engage the students in the unit content and I think they enjoyed the classes.

Year 11 Health
|
My year 11 Health class consisted of only 9 students. Having a small class allowed me to really get to know the girls which went a long way in building my teacher-student relationships with them. Together we covered the topics of Nutrition and Mental Health. My supervising teacher showed me the VCE study outcomes and key skills that she wanted me to focus on, and also the chapters from the exercise book and then allowed me to design my own lesson based on that unit content. The main nutrition topics that we covered were the Australian Government's role in promoting healthy eating and also non-government organisations and their role in promoting healthy eating. The mental health topic that I covered was mood disorders, specifically depression and bipolar disorder. I used a range of different teaching and learning techniques during these lessons and the students all gave me the feedback that they really enjoyed and learnt a lot from my classes.
